Some workers who participate in Amazon’s Mechanical Turk crowdsourcing marketplace say the company suspended their payments accounts without explanation due to an apparent technical problem in the system.
An unknown number of “Turkers,” as they’re sometimes known, started experiencing the problem last week. When attempting to log into Mechanical Turk, they saw messages saying that their payments accounts had been suspended. This prevented them from participating in projects that provide them with income.
Some workers said their payments accounts were restored over the weekend, but others said their accounts were still down as of Tuesday, indicating a slow recovery.
“We have largely resolved an isolated system issue that temporarily prevented some Mechanical Turk workers from accessing parts of the service,” said Montana MacLachlan, an Amazon spokesperson, in a statement Tuesday.
Turkers are also discussing the issue on Reddit, in the Mechanical Turk subreddit.
Some Mechanical Turk workers started contacting GeekWire after the outage of Amazon.com’s checkout system on Friday afternoon, theorizing that the two issues were related. It’s not clear if they were.
It’s the latest in a series of problems to hit Amazon’s payments platforms, including delayed payouts to Amazon Flex drivers last month.
Initially, some of those who contacted Mechanical Turk support were directed to Amazon Payments, which sent them back to Mechanical Turk, in apparent sign that those inside the company were similarly flummoxed by the issue.
In one exchange viewed by GeekWire, Amazon Payments told a Mechanical Turk worker — in a message to the email address associated with his account — that his account was suspended because Amazon couldn’t verify his email address.
In some cases, Amazon Payments support told impacted workers to create new accounts under different email addresses. However, workers worried that doing so could violate the terms of service, and get them permanently banned.
